Credit Cards Are At Risk

Take Action

Credit cards help people manage everyday purchases and big expenses, earn rewards and special benefits, and build credit for the future. Proposed policies advancing in Washington could reduce payment security, limit access to credit, and put rewards at risk for individuals, families, and small businesses.

Take action TODAY and tell Washington to REJECT these harmful mandates and protect the credit card benefits that matter to you. Your voice can make a difference.

  • Credit card routing mandates? A bill in the U.S. Senate would allow mega-retailers to route credit card transactions based solely on what is cheapest for them, rather than what’s most secure for consumers. This could increase fraud risk by sending more sensitive financial data over less tested networks and jeopardize rewards and cash-back programs.
  • What happened with my debit card? History shows that when similar routing mandates were applied on debit card transactions, debit card rewards all but disappeared. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, merchants did not lower prices (and in some cases raised them) while debit card fraud increased.
  • A 10% credit card rate cap? Another proposal would impose a government-set cap on credit card rates, drastically reducing credit availability, impacting nearly 90% of card holders, and pushing many to more expensive or less safe alternatives. Learn more about credit card interest rates.
  • Rewards are at stake? U.S. card rewards total roughly $68 billion, helping households across income levels with expenses like groceries, travel, and back-to-school shopping. New mandates on credit cards jeopardize these vital rewards and cashback programs.
